I am a huge Motorhead Fan, and I have owned and listened to multiple different vinyl copies of Bomber including original Bronze issue vinyl Album) the LP and at least two re-issues.
I have to say that this CD sounds great, and the packaging is outstanding. Aside from the music sounding awesome, you just have to love the concept of an album named for a WW2 bomber, with the awesome cover art jumping out at you. How cool it must have been to show up at one of their shows back in the day and hear an air raid siren going off in the distance with a huge model of a Heinkel HE extended over the stage.
I highly recommend this album. Overkill is on order now :. One person found this helpful. I paid 30 bucks for two already released songs but thank you again for selling it! Very nice purchase with great pictures from promotions to art work from when the album was made. The concert on the second CD is really neat too. I hope the very same treament will be given to "Ace of Spades" and "Iron Fist". This Mortorhead lineup was unbelievable and every album from that era deserves a face lift of the same kind.
I already had copy of Bomber but the packaging on this and the extra live set on double LP made it worth getting. Highly recommended for any Motorhead, new or old! Classic line-up! Gotta love Lemmy. Great forty year issue! Great packaging! Great music. See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews. Translate all reviews to English. I am not going to review the original album in too much detail as it's so well known.
In my opinion its got some great tracks that are Motorhead classicsthe title track, 'Dead Men Tell No Tales,' and 'Stone Dead Forever' and a lot of other good tracks. It does betray a too fast follow up as it was the second album in less than a year and Lemmy and the band always said they should have road tested some of the tracks before recording which would have perhaps better developed some of the songs.
Also the slight dip in song quality is amplified in that for me personally, it sits between the two greateest Motorhead albums of the classic era 'Overkill' and 'Ace of Spades' The reason to get this reissue is the live recording. Like the 'Overkill 40th Anniversary' release it finally gives long term fans a good quality almost full lengh live recording of the great Bomber tour.
I say almost as 'White Line fever' I think Album) an edit but I can't be sure. Maybe they shortened it as it was a festival gig and also missing is one of my all time favs from the tour, 'Stone Dead Forever'. It maybe a timing issue on the limits of the cd format or maybe again they did not play it at this particular festival gig or even the tape for that part was damaged.
No matter, you already have a great version fron the 'Golden Years Live EP' if you already have the earlier cd deluxe reissues. Or if not it is still widely available and worth getting for the extras for which there are none on the first cd here.
Like I said on my other 40th deluxe review of Overkill, I think it is probably a soundboard so there is only so much that can be done but it is a good warts and all recording from the tour. Again I would have liked to have had more info about the tape source. I always wondered how much more there was in the archives from the multi track recording LP Vic Maile did of the 'Bomber; tour and whether it was still archived.
There was always the impression given from interviews at the time that due to the LP that they played, some of the live recording was unusable. Its a pulsating rock and roll number, apparently inspired by the Len Deighton novel of the same name.
The two side closers — Capricorn on side one, and Limb from Limb, inject a little psych into things, just a little, and Lemmy makes sure he keeps control of it all. Overkill had only dropped in the March ofbut by the October Bomber was out. Crashing into the album charts at number 12, the record sees Lemmy tackle a variety of subjects — heroin in Dead Men Tell No Tales despite the increasing addiction of producer Jimmy Miller to the substanceas well as Television Talking Headhis fathers desertion Poison and the Police Lawman amongst others, all with his usual anger and vitriol.
Right from the off Dead Men Tell No Tales its clear that the band are able to write what are, when stripped away, brilliant pop songs, and just wrap them up in aggression, noise and guitar solos. Follow on Lawman threatens just to chug away until Lemmy intervenes, and riffs get thrown in at various unexpected points.
Elsewhere, All the Aces propels along, Lemmy at his best rhyming vomit with far from it for one before being showered in this blistering guitar solo from Clarke, who also shines in the follow on, the bluesy Step Down, which also features Clarke on the vocals.
Its the sound of a band at its best. Its a record that sees a band that have moved on in just a year. To get the lighting right, Poison - Motörhead - Bomber (Vinyl, I got a little Airfix kit of a Heinkelmade it up and sprayed it black". He then took photos to get the reflection underneath. Chesterman took the call on the Friday and met up with the band the next day. Phil had a tin of Special Brew in his hand.
The pictures of them in the plane were so small, I needed passport-sized photographs, which I cut out and painted in. I had to get them to snarl and look like they were shooting machine guns.
Lemmy is curling his lip up. And Phil just had that expression permanently". The effect was completed by a chrome Snaggletooth on the side of the plane. The single "Bomber" was released on 1 Decemberfive weeks after the album; the single's initial pressing of 20, on blue vinyl was soon sold out and was replaced by black vinyl.
This lighting-rig could move backwards and forwards, and side-to-side — the first to be able to do so. In White Line FeverLemmy calls Bomber "a transitional record" but admits "there are a couple of really naff tracks on it, like 'Talking Head. It wasn't all there". The bonus tracks on the second CD, however, have all previously been available.
